Career guidance: key steps to a dream profession

Career counselors emphasize the importance of starting a conversation with children about choosing a future profession early. To help teenagers understand their goals and desires in choosing a university major, the Ministry of Education has launched the All-Ukrainian project “Choose Your Dream Profession.”

According to Ihor Garbaruk, Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine, there is currently no systematic career guidance in Ukraine. A significant number of school graduates, up to 80%, do not have a clear idea of their future career paths and professional aspirations.

To change the situation, Ukraine plans to start career guidance as early as grades 3-4, following the example of European countries. According to an official at the Ministry of Education, in Germany, where vocational guidance begins in grades 4-5, 60-70% of school graduates go on to vocational education.

In addition, the principle of dual education is already being implemented, when training takes place at practical sites where future specialists have access to modern equipment. Some after-school clubs already take this principle into account, giving students the opportunity to learn at workplaces, not just in classrooms.

Teenagers are also offered parallel training packages in three areas to choose from: 3D modeling, game development, and programming. During the course, students can change the direction of their studies. In total, the center offers eight courses covering various areas, from game development to graphic design.

However, it is worth noting that training at these centers is not free. Parents will have to pay a certain amount of money every month for participation in the educational process. Exceptions are made for gifted children and children from low-income families, who are given the opportunity to receive free education.

Moreover, the Ministry of Education and schools are also actively working on other career guidance initiatives. One of them is the introduction of professional orientation packages in the curriculum. This will allow students to learn more about different professions at the stage of general education.

All of these measures are aimed at ensuring that young people have enough information and opportunities to make a well-considered choice of their future profession that matches their abilities and interests. Part of career guidance is psychological support for students. Young people often face a lot of choices and uncertainty, and they need to be able to get advice from professionals in the field of career guidance and career development.

The role of parents in the career guidance process is also important. They can be supportive of their child, helping them to identify their goals and interests, and considering different career options with them.

In addition, an important component of successful career guidance is the development of key skills that will help young people adapt to a changing labor market. These skills include communication skills, critical thinking, creativity, self-learning, and teamwork.

Schools and educational institutions should provide opportunities for students to develop these skills through a variety of educational programs and extracurricular activities. For example, incorporating project assignments, debates, creative competitions, and other active learning methods will help students increase their competitiveness in the labor market.

We need to create mentoring programs where experienced professionals can share their knowledge and experience with young people. This will help to increase their awareness of specific areas of activity and prepare them for real challenges in the future.

Thus, along with career guidance initiatives, the development of key skills plays an important role in preparing young people for a successful career and achieving personal and professional development.

For effective career guidance, it is also important to create opportunities for students to explore different professional paths through practical experience. This can include internships, excursions to enterprises and institutions, participation in workshops and other forms of learning outside the classroom.

It is also important to expand information resources for students and their parents about various professional opportunities. Information sessions, webinars, open lectures, and conferences can be useful sources of knowledge about current labor market trends and requirements for various professions.

In general, to succeed in career guidance, comprehensive support is needed from the government, educational institutions, businesses, and NGOs. This will help ensure that every student has the opportunity to make informed choices and realize their professional and personal ambitions.
