Cyprus begins talks with Britain over future of its military bases on the island

On March 25, Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides announced that he had already begun negotiations with Great Britain regarding the future fate of British military bases on the island. This is reported by Reuters.

According to Christodoulides, Cyprus has a “clear plan” to resolve the issue related to the future of British bases.

“We have a clear plan to resolve all issues related to British bases in Cyprus step by step,” he stressed.

At the same time, the president did not disclose details, but noted that he had already informed the British side about its intentions.

Previously, the media reported that Cyprus was seeking new and more reliable security guarantees from the UK after Iranian drone attacks on British military bases on the island. After this, Britain increased its military presence near Cyprus.

On March 2, the country’s Ministry of Defense confirmed that the Akrotiri Royal Air Force base on the island had been attacked twice by Iranian drones. Against the backdrop of this incident, Greece announced the dispatch of two frigates and four F-16 fighter jets to Cyprus. In addition, several European states have also increased their military presence in the region in solidarity with Cyprus. In particular, France has deployed three of its largest warships there.
