Danish Foreign Minister Warns US Ambassador of Inadmissibility of Claims to Greenland

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, after summoning the American ambassador, stated that Denmark would not comply with Donald Trump’s demand to hand over Greenland. This was reported by Bloomberg.

Løkke held talks with US Ambassador Ken Haveri in Copenhagen on Monday after Trump announced plans to appoint Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as a special envoy for Greenland.

According to the Danish Foreign Minister, the purpose of the meeting was to say “no” and draw a clear red line, but of course also simply ask for an explanation.”

“An attack on one part of the kingdom is an attack on the whole kingdom,” he added in a comment to local television.

Relations between Denmark and the United States have been strained since Trump took office, which came amid his statements about his intention to seize Greenland, a resource-rich Danish territory in the Arctic, citing “security considerations.”

Denmark and Greenland insist that the island is not for sale and that its people will decide their own future.
