Finnish intelligence officer leads European Parliament delegation on Ukraine
MEP Pekka Toveri, who headed the Finnish Military Intelligence Directorate from 2019 to 2020, was elected to the post of head of the European Parliament delegation on Ukraine. This information was reported by Toveri himself, noting the importance of his new appointment, transmits edition of Yle.
In his statement, Toveri emphasized that the work of the delegation should be more than just official speeches. He called for active cooperation and concrete actions to achieve real results.
“So that the work of the delegation is not limited to ceremonial speeches, now is the time to join forces and roll up our sleeves. I am optimistic that we will do important things”, – said Toveri about his election.
The main task of the delegation is to develop the international relations of the European Parliament and highlight key political issues related to Ukraine and regional challenges. Toveri emphasized that the focus of the delegation’s work will be aimed at supporting Ukraine in the war, as well as assessing the role of the EU in the process of peace negotiations and the implementation of sanctions against Russia.
“We will concentrate on how the European Union can help Ukraine win the war”, – noted Toveri. On the agenda will also be the question of Ukraine’s future membership in the EU, however, according to Toveri, the first priority for now is to help in a military victory.
Toveri also emphasized that the European Union needs to improve its decision-making mechanisms in the field of defense and security, since the situation in Ukraine cannot be considered only through the prism of strategic guidelines or political programs.
“We must understand that supporting Ukraine requires a comprehensive approach”, the MEP emphasized.
This appointment, in his opinion, gives him the opportunity to more actively express his position on Ukraine even outside the delegation. Toveri believes that the support of the European Union at this crucial moment should be as concrete and effective as possible.
