Foreign direct investment in Ukraine decreased by 14% in 2024

In 11 months of 2024, the inflow of foreign direct investment (FDI) to Ukraine amounted to $3.98 billion, which is 14% less than in the same period of the previous year. Such data made public head of the parliamentary committee on finance, tax and customs policy Danylo Hetmantsev, referring to the statistics of the National Bank of Ukraine.

The net inflow of FDI, taking into account the withdrawal of investments abroad, during this period amounted to $3.64 billion, which is 19% less compared to 2023. Most of the investments — 64% — were provided by the reinvested profits of foreign companies already operating in Ukraine. For comparison, in 2023 this share was 75%.

Hetmantsev noted that the reduction in the volume of direct investments, as well as the low share of new (green field) projects, is a worrying trend for the economy of Ukraine. In his opinion, even in the conditions of a full-scale war, which continues for the third year, the government should work more actively to attract new investors.

“Foreign investment is vital for macro-financial stability and long-term economic growth. The government should demonstrate greater results in this direction.” – he emphasized in his statement.

Attracting new investments remains a key challenge for Ukraine, because their lack negatively affects the possibilities of economic development and implementation of strategic projects.
