Former head of the State Emergency Service of Ivano-Frankivsk region will stand trial for large-scale illegal deforestation

The State Bureau of Investigation completed the investigation of a criminal case against the former head of the Main Department of the State Emergency Service in the Ivano-Frankivsk region, who organized illegal logging on the territory of the nature reserve fund for the amount of more than 7 million hryvnias. The indictment has already been sent to court.

According to the investigation, in August 2023, a former official, under the guise of conducting forest fire extinguishing exercises, involved more than a hundred subordinates in illegal tree felling work. The work was carried out on a 112.1-hectare land plot outside the village of Nova Huta, which is part of the Chornyi lis general zoological reserve.

As a result of these actions, the state suffered losses in the amount of 7 million 300 thousand hryvnias. The official was exposed with the assistance of the Department of Internal Security of the National Police.

The former head of the State Emergency Service has been charged under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine: abuse of power or official authority by a law enforcement officer, which resulted in grave consequences (Part 3, Article 365), and illegal logging, transportation, storage or sale of forest with grave consequences (Part 4, Article 246). The sanction under these articles provides for up to ten years of imprisonment.

The procedural management of the case is carried out by the Prosecutor General’s Office.
