From housing to entrepreneurship: the main directions of veteran policy from the Ministry of Veterans Affairs
The strategy of veterans’ policy in Ukraine should be based on the real needs of defenders, and not on far-fetched ideas. About this in interview Acting Minister of Veterans Affairs Oleksandr Porhun told RBC-Ukraine.
The main directions of veteran policy
According to Porhun, veteran policy is one of the state’s priorities. It is based on synergy between various authorities – from the Cabinet of Ministers to local self-government bodies, and the leader of this process is the Ministry of Veterans Affairs. On August 22, 2024, within the framework of the 7th International Veterans Forum, the president signed a decree that provides:
- development of a new veteran policy strategy;
- creation of a transition system from military service to civilian life;
- the development of veteran spaces and the launch of a single veteran line.
Six key directions:
Rehabilitation and recovery – covers medical, psychological, physical rehabilitation and sports programs for veterans.
Re-education and employment – veteran policy is aimed not only at obtaining education, but also at creating opportunities for employment.
Development of veteran business – 64% of active servicemen express a desire to open their own business after returning. For this purpose, 250 million hryvnias have been allocated for business projects of veterans through the “Ukrainian Veterans’ Fund”. The state provides financial assistance in the amount of half a million to 1.5 million hryvnias.
Provision of housing – provision of housing is a key element, because without it any rehabilitation loses its meaning. Providing veterans with cars is also an important aspect.
Digitization of processes – automating the provision of services and benefits to veterans to facilitate access to state support.
Honoring and perpetuating the memory of the dead – creation of the National Military Memorial Cemetery, which will be a memorial complex to honor the heroes of Ukraine.
In addition, the Ministry is working on the branding of veteran products and cooperation with large chains such as Silpo and Auchan to promote products created by veterans.
