Hamas fired rockets at Israel: IDF responds by threatening to expand offensive on Gaza Strip
Hamas militants carried out a rocket attack on the territory of Israel, after which the Israeli military was ordered to intensify the operation in the Gaza Strip. About this informs The Times of Israel.
On the evening of April 6, in the Lachish district, which is located in the south-central part of the country, approximately ten shells were identified that crossed the territory of Israel from the central part of Gaza. According to the IDF, “approximately five projectiles were successfully intercepted”, but some of the rockets hit their targets in several areas.
Security services and rescuers worked in Ashkelon, where one of the rockets fired from the territory of the Gaza Strip fell. Militants launched rockets from the Deir el-Balah district in the center of Gaza in the direction of Ashdod, a port city on the Mediterranean coast with a population of 207,000.
“At least one of the five missiles that were not intercepted hit Ashkelon, causing damage and injuring one person,” – the message says.
Doctors noted that the victim received minor injuries. Footage from the scene appeared online. Israeli media called this shelling from the Gaza Strip the biggest in many months.
In response to the shelling of the Ashdod area, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on Defense Minister Israel Katz to “respond strongly” and supported the continuation of active actions against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The defense minister, in turn, said he had instructed the IDF to “continue and expand” its offensive against Hamas in Gaza. Katz also said he had ordered the Israel Defense Forces to “deliver a very heavy blow to Hamas in Gaza in response to the shelling.”
“For every fragment of shrapnel that hits a resident of Ashkelon, the killers of Hamas will pay a very high price”, he added.
