Igor Klymenko reported new details of the shooting in Kyiv

The man who opened fire in Kyiv acted unsystematically and used civilian weapons, the purchase of which is permitted by law. The attacker was eliminated during the assault after he killed another hostage. This was reported at a briefing by the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Ihor Klymenko.

He said that the shooter started moving from Demiivska Street and behaved very chaotically. According to the minister, it was clear that he “simply shot people at point-blank range,” without following any system.

“He fired single shots at close range, people had almost no chance. He approached and fired. He fired single shots, because it’s a carbine that fires single shots,” ‒ the minister noted.

During the movement, the shooter managed to kill four people, and later seized the Walmart supermarket. After the arrival of the police and KORD fighters, they tried to negotiate with him. According to the minister, they persuaded him “for 40 minutes,” but he did not react at all and, moreover, killed another hostage. It was after this that the decision was made to launch the assault.

According to Klymenko, the attacker’s weapon has already been seized. It is a carbine that is allowed to be purchased by civilians, that is, the shooter’s weapon was legal.

“He was registered. In December 2025, he applied to the licensing system with a request to shoot him. He brought a medical certificate. The investigation will check who provided it,” the minister assured.
