In Transcarpathia, the protection of the state border of Ukraine with Romania and Hungary has been strengthened

Protection of the state border of Ukraine with Romania and Hungary has been strengthened in Transcarpathia. Western Regional Office of the State Border Service of Ukraine reported, that in the border areas, which are considered the most vulnerable, additional units of border guards have been deployed.
According to the information of the department, the border teams will work with the use of specialized equipment, unmanned aerial vehicles, aircraft and other modern technologies for effective monitoring and control of the situation at the border.
The State Border Service noted that these measures are part of a large-scale operation aimed at intensifying the fight against illegal activities at the state border. At the same time, the department did not specify specific details about which offenses are recorded in this direction.
It is worth reminding that the issue of illegal border crossing in Transcarpathia has become particularly acute. In particular, in February, Romanian border guards officially announced that during 2024, more than 13,000 men from Ukraine illegally crossed the Ukrainian-Romanian border. Agerpres agency wrote about it.
As Florin Koman, head of the Territorial Inspection of the Border Police of Sziget-Marmații in the Maramures County, explained, Ukrainian citizens most often tried to get to Romania by crossing the Tisza River or crossing the mountainous terrain. Such attempts to illegally cross the border were often accompanied by significant risks for the lives of the violators themselves.
According to Florin Koman, in many cases, when Ukrainian men were detained by Romanian border guards, they immediately requested protection on the territory of Romania.
The head of the border agency also emphasized that in 2024, the number of recorded cases of illegal border crossing increased significantly — the indicator more than tripled the similar data for 2023.
