In Ukraine, the production of steel, cast iron and rolled metal has significantly decreased.

According to the results of January–February 2026, Ukrainian Metallurgical enterprises have experienced a significant decrease in the production of key metals. This is reported by GMK-Center.

Steel production fell by 13.2% compared to the same period last year, reaching 1.03 million tons. Pig iron output decreased by 11.2%, to 1.01 million tons, and rolled metal production decreased by 16.8%, to 797 thousand tons.

In February 2026, the decline in production continued: metallurgical enterprises produced 390.3 thousand tons of rolled metal, which is 18.2% less than in February 2025. Compared to January 2026, rolled metal production decreased by 4%.

Steel smelting in February decreased by 9.9% year-on-year, to 515 thousand tons, while compared to January the indicator increased slightly – by 0.8%. Pig iron production for this month amounted to 461.9 thousand tons, which is 15.2% less than in February last year and 16% less than in January.

According to the Ukrmetallurgprom Joint Stock Company, the reduction in production is accompanied by a significant decrease in the number of employees in the industry: in the four years since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion, the number of personnel in the mining and metallurgical complex has almost halved – from 122 thousand to 62 thousand people.

Experts note that the decline in production is associated with both the prolonged war and global economic fluctuations and rising energy prices, which affects the profitability of metallurgical enterprises. At the same time, the metallurgical sector remains strategically important for the economy of Ukraine and the export of products to foreign markets.
