Israel resumes ground operations in northern Gaza
The Israel Defense Forces resumed ground operations in the northern Gaza Strip and carried out airstrikes on the southern city of Khan Younis as part of a renewed military campaign. Its goal is to increase pressure on Hamas to release the Israeli hostages. About this informs The Guardian.
According to the local Nasser hospital, at least 25 people died as a result of the airstrike on Khan Yunis. Rescuers continue to search for survivors.
Since the resumption of hostilities on March 18, the number of dead Palestinians in Gaza has exceeded 1,250. At least 100 of them died in attacks on three schools that had been converted into shelters. The Israeli army said the airstrikes targeted Hamas command centers.
Meanwhile, according to UN estimates, about 280,000 people have been forced to leave their homes or temporary shelters after Israel decided to end a two-month truce with Hamas, including halting the delivery of humanitarian aid and fuel.
After that, the ground forces again entered the sector’s southernmost city, Rafah, as well as the Netsarim corridor. The Israeli military has confirmed its advance into the Shujai district, a suburb in the north of Gaza.
It will be recalled that this week Israeli officials announced their intention to establish control over parts of Gaza to create security zones, as well as build a new military corridor between Rafah and Khan Younis. Such plans have raised concerns among the Palestinian population, particularly over the risk of further forced displacement and possible annexation of the territories.
