Kremlin special envoy Kirill Dmitriev said that Russia, the US and Ukraine are close to a diplomatic settlement to end the war
The head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund and the Kremlin’s special envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, said that Russia, the United States and Ukraine are “close to a diplomatic solution” that could end the war between the two countries. This was reported by the agency Reuters.
After arriving in Washington for talks with American officials, Dmitriev said that the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin had not been canceled, as Trump had previously claimed, and would likely take place later.
He reiterated that Russia, the US and Ukraine were “close to a diplomatic solution” that could stop the war.
“I believe that Russia, the United States and Ukraine are actually quite close to a diplomatic solution,” – said Dmitriev.
He also called Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s statement about the possibility of discussing the front line during the negotiations a “big step”.
“This is a big step by President Zelenskyy – to admit that we are talking about the front lines. His previous position was that Russia should completely leave, so I think we are close enough to a diplomatic solution that can be worked out, he added.
As a reminder, this week the Donald Trump administration imposed sanctions on two of Russia’s largest oil companies – “Rosneft” and “Lukoil”, calling on the Kremlin to immediately cease fire in Ukraine.
The White House believes that these restrictions could seriously affect the Russian economy, which is experiencing financial difficulties and is largely dependent on energy exports.
After the sanctions were announced, Indian oil refineries began to check their suppliers, and some Chinese companies temporarily suspended purchases of Russian oil.
