Mykola Azarov sentenced in absentia to 15 years in prison for treason and anti-state activities

The Pechersky District Court of Kyiv has sentenced former Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykola Azarov, finding him guilty of high treason and actions aimed at forcibly changing the constitutional order. This is stated in the published decision of the court.

In March 2024, the Kyiv prosecutor’s office submitted an indictment against Azarov and his assistant to the court. The court imposed a sentence of 15 years in prison with confiscation of property. The verdict was handed down in absentia, as the former prime minister is in Russia.

The investigation established that Azarov actively promoted subversive activities against the state, spread pro-Russian propaganda through his own Telegram channel, and justified the armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine. He was supported by two Ukrainian citizens who worked in the Shevchenkivskyi District State Administration of Kyiv. They prepared and edited materials for publications that were submitted to the curator.

Mykola Azarov headed the government of Ukraine during the presidency of Viktor Yanukovych and was an active participant in the politics of the Party of Regions. In 2013, his government suspended preparations for signing the Association Agreement with the EU, which caused a wave of Euromaidan protests.
