SBU releases information about the wreckage of the Russian “Oreshnik” in the Lviv region

The Security Service of Ukraine stated that it has located the fragments of a Russian ballistic missile with which Russian troops struck the Lviv region on the night of January 9. According to preliminary data, the discovered components may belong to the Oreshnik missile complex.

As reported by the SBU, a number of elements of the missile have already been identified at the site, in particular the stabilization and guidance unit, engine installation parts, fragments of the orientation mechanism, as well as nozzles from the platform of the firing unit and other parts. The special service emphasizes that the use of this weapon against the civilian infrastructure of Ukraine is considered a war crime by Russia.

The SBU also noted that, according to preliminary information, the missile launch could have been carried out from the Russian Kapustin Yar test site, and the ammunition itself was a medium-range surface-to-surface missile.

“According to preliminary data, the enemy launched a medium-range surface-to-surface Oreshnik missile from the Russian Kapustin Yar test site. By attacking civilian facilities of our state near the border with the European Union, the Kremlin tried to destroy the life-support infrastructure of the region in conditions of a sharp deterioration in weather conditions. SBU investigators are establishing all the circumstances, as well as the organizers and perpetrators of this war crime by the Russian Federation, in order to bring them to justice.” – SBU
