In modern Ukraine, where war has invaded the lives of millions of people, not only adults, but also children have become part of the national resistance movement. Her story is a combination of childlike sincerity, incredible courage and tremendous willpower. Despite the loss of her father, Irynka not only preserved his memory, but also continued his work, helping the soldiers of his brigade. Her desire to help the defenders of Ukraine and sincere devotion to the idea of victory did not go unnoticed. On the occasion of Volunteer’s Day, the girl was recognized as the brother of her dead father, which became a touching moment in the life of both Irynka herself and everyone who follows her path.

An eight-year-old volunteer: the story of a small big heart

Irynka Vasylieva is an ordinary girl from Rivne, but her life changed dramatically after the start of the war. In 2022, her father, 32-year-old Oleksandr Vasiliev, died defending Mykolaiv Oblast. Despite her grief, Irynka did not give up and decided to continue his cause, helping the military from the 14th separate mechanized brigade named after Prince Roman the Great, where her father served. The girl started her volunteer activity by weaving wreaths and selling them at charity fairs. She directed the collected funds to purchase the necessary equipment for the brigade: from cars and tablets to anti-drone guns.

Her contribution was invaluable. During her activity, Irynka handed over ten drones to defenders and was even able to raise funds for five new ones. This result is not just an indicator of children’s activity, but a symbol of incredible strength of spirit that inspires adults. In addition, the girl dreams of raising money for Javelin – a dream that once again proves her purposefulness and determination.

Irynka’s volunteer activities began long before the start of the full-scale invasion. Her mother, Victoria Vasilieva, said that since she was four years old, the girl took part in charity trips to orphanages. It was her own wish, because Irynka always showed concern for those who needed help. With the beginning of the war, she wove camouflage nets, and later expanded her activities, organizing charity events to support the military.

Her efforts were repeatedly recognized: Irynka received awards from the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, the Rivne City Council, and the military even presented her with a uniform with a “best commander” chevron. However, the most important thing for her is the support of her parent brigade, with which she maintains a close relationship.

Recognition from the military

On December 11, on the occasion of Volunteer Day, Irynka received an award from the 14th separate mechanized brigade. This award, approved by the brigade commander, is usually given to outstanding service members and volunteers who make a significant contribution to the common victory. Irynka’s award was a recognition of her hard work and gratitude for the support of the military who continue to defend Ukraine.

The head of the brigade’s public relations department, Nadiya Zamryga, noted that Irynka is an example of determination and inner strength. Despite her age, she acts like a true warrior, striving to help the defenders of Ukraine and avenge her father. Her story is a reminder of how even small actions can have a huge impact. Her devotion and faith in victory inspire not only the military, but also thousands of other Ukrainians.
