The chairmanship of the UN Security Council is needed by the Russian Federation as an instrument of influence in the international system – ISW

Moscow has used its tentative presidency of the UN Security Council in April 2023 to develop a series of narratives about its desired influence in the world. 

Russia begins its one-month presidency of the UN Security Council and, most likely, will use this position as a tool for projecting power in the international system “as it has been historically.” It is about this in messages American Institute for the Study of War.

They noted that during the presidency of the UN Security Council in April 2023, Russia used this opportunity to develop several narratives regarding the desire to dominate the international system. In addition, experts previously claimed that the Russian Federation uses its right of veto in the UN Security Council as a basis for power projection.

“Some high-ranking Russian officials have recently launched information operations aimed at deflecting responsibility for Russia’s well-documented violations of international law committed in Ukraine, likely preparing the conditions for a future presidency of the UN Security Council,” the report, released on the night of July 2.

As you know, Russia’s presidency of the UN Security Council began on July 1. The Russian Foreign Ministry announced that the debates of the UN Security Council on July 16 and 17 will be chaired by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

Some high-ranking Russian officials have recently launched information operations aimed at absolving themselves of responsibility for documented violations of international law committed by Russia in Ukraine, and likely in order to create the conditions for a future presidency of the UN Security Council.
