The Ministry of Health warns: the season of snake activity has begun in Ukraine

Ministry of Health of Ukraine warns citizens about the beginning of the period of activity of reptiles, in particular poisonous snakes, which is typical for spring and summer. In connection with warming, the probability of meeting them in nature, especially in forests, steppes and nature reserves, increases.

The Ministry of Health reminds that most snakes do not pose a threat to human health and they try to avoid contact. However, three species of poisonous vipers live in Ukraine, the bites of which may require medical intervention:

  • common viper is the most common poisonous species. It occurs in Polissia, the Carpathians and partially in the forest-steppe zone. It is easily recognized by the dark zigzag stripe along the back;
  • steppe viper — rare and protected by the state. Its habitat is the steppes of southern Ukraine, mainly in nature conservation areas;
  • Nikolsky’s viper is a black snake that lives in the northeast of the country. Also listed in the Red Book.

The Ministry of Health emphasizes that these snakes usually do not show aggression if they do not feel threatened. However, in the case of a bite, especially when a child or a person with allergies is affected, you should immediately consult a doctor. The poison does not always carry a mortal threat, but requires professional help.

To avoid being bitten, experts recommend wearing tight shoes and clothes when walking in nature, carefully checking places of rest and avoiding sudden movements if you see a snake. The main thing is not to try to catch or drive her away.

The Ministry of Health also warns against common mistakes when providing assistance: you should not suck out poison, apply a tourniquet, cauterize the bite site, or drink alcohol. Such actions only worsen the situation. If it is not possible to get to a hospital immediately, basic first aid should be given as recommended, but in any case, seek medical attention as soon as possible.
