The National Military Cemetery will accommodate up to 160,000 burials: Ministry of Veterans Affairs
The National Military Memorial Cemetery is designed for 100,000 traditional burials and 60,000 places in columbariums. This was reported by acting Minister of Veteran Affairs of Ukraine Oleksandr Porhun interview for “RBK-Ukraine”.
An area of almost 270 hectares has been set aside for the National Military Memorial Cemetery in Gatnenska Hromad, near the Southern Cemetery. According to building regulations, the distance from the cemetery to residential buildings should be at least 300 meters. Oleksandr Porhun noted that a distance of 500 to almost 800 meters has already been provided on this site, and 140 hectares of buffer zone with forest plantations have been created. The cemetery will be located closer to the Odesa highway.
Porhun emphasized that the cemetery is being created for many decades and will not be filled instantly. It is important to note that burials on it are not compulsory, and military families will have the opportunity to choose. According to him, after the victory, servicemen who became veterans or will continue to serve will have the right to be buried at this memorial.
The creation of a cemetery is especially relevant for families who were forced to leave their homes due to the war and occupation. Many bodies of the dead are stored in refrigerators or ashes are kept at home, because relatives cannot bury them in their native land.
The project envisages places for 100,000 traditional burials and 60,000 columbarium places, which will solve the problem of burials for many years to come.
