The US has lifted sanctions that prevented Hungary from building the Paks-2 nuclear power plant together with Rosatom
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary, Peter Szijarto, said that the US government has lifted the sanctions that prevented the implementation of the expansion project of the Hungarian nuclear power plant “Paksh-2” in cooperation with the Russian state company “Rosatom”. About this informs Bloomberg.
“The US lifted the sanctions that blocked the construction of the Paksh-2 nuclear power plant. These politically motivated measures were implemented by the Biden administration just before Donald Trump took office. We are grateful to the Trump administration, as this project will guarantee our future energy supply.”, – noted Peter Sijarto.
The project, which is being implemented with the participation of the Russian company Rosatom, has faced legal difficulties and significant delays in recent years.
“Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is also often at odds with his colleagues from the European Union because of his close ties with Russia, which supplies the bulk of Hungary’s energy imports,” – the message says.
Sijarto also said that despite progress in the field of nuclear energy, conflicts with the EU regarding the purchase of oil and gas are likely to remain.
“Construction of the main equipment units for the Paksh NPP continues in Russia and France. In Paksh, construction can now proceed at a faster pace.” he added.
The Paksh-2 project involves the expansion of Hungary’s only nuclear power plant. For this purpose, Hungary is cooperating with the Russian company “Rosatom”, planning to install two water-water power reactors (WPP) with a capacity of 1.2 gigawatts each. The agreement with Russia was concluded in 2014.
