The Verkhovna Rada approved the law on multiple citizenship

The Verkhovna Rada approved in the second reading and as a whole draft law No. 11469, which provides for the introduction of the institution of multiple citizenship in Ukraine. About this reported First Deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Tax and Customs Policy Yaroslav Zhelezniak.
The document provides for cases in which multiple citizenships are allowed for citizens of Ukraine. It is, in particular, about situations when a child automatically receives the citizenship of Ukraine and another state by birth, or when a Ukrainian child acquires the citizenship of foreign adopters.
Also, multiple citizenship is allowed in cases where a citizen of Ukraine receives another citizenship automatically through marriage or as a result of the laws of another state — provided that he does not have an official document confirming this foreign citizenship.
In addition, the draft law provides for the possibility of acquiring Ukrainian citizenship in a simplified manner for citizens of certain countries, the list of which will be determined separately. Under the same conditions, the preservation of Ukrainian citizenship is allowed for those who will receive the citizenship of the states from this list.
At the same time, multiple citizenship will be prohibited for persons who have a passport of a citizen of the Russian Federation — an aggressor country or an occupying country — or another country that does not recognize the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine.
Until now, the legislation of Ukraine did not recognize dual citizenship. However, in practice, many Ukrainians living abroad have already acquired or are planning to acquire the citizenship of other countries.
