The Volodymyr-Olgyn Chapel of the Tithe Church of the UOC was demolished at night in Kyiv (video)
In Kyiv, on the night of May 17, the Volodymyr-Olgynska chapel, which was located on the territory of the Tenth Monastery of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UPC), was dismantled. A video from the scene, published on the monastery’s Telegram channel, recorded the removal of icons, paintings and other church property.
It was reported in the Telegram channel of the Tithe Monastery.
“The temple, which was consecrated by two more blessed metropolitans – Volodymyr and Onufriy, no longer exists“, says the message of the UOC.
Officials have not yet commented on who exactly carried out the dismantling and by whose decision. However, it is known that as early as Thursday, UOC lawyer Mykyta Chekman reported on the encirclement of the Desyatyn Monastery by the police and military.
A long history of the struggle for the shrine
Demolition of the chapel was the culmination of a long-standing confrontation around the Tenth Monastery, located near the historical place where Prince Volodymyr the Great built the first stone church of Kievan Rus in the 10th century.
The modern chapel was built in 2007 on the site of a temporary tabernacle. However, nationalist organizations actively opposed the construction, accusing the UOC of illegally occupying the territory of the cultural monument.
In 2021, the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine obtained a court decision to dismantle the chapel, which was confirmed by the appeals court in 2023. Despite numerous appeals by believers and attempts to appeal, the fate of the shrine was decided.
