This has not happened since the Second World War: a record number of countries are involved in armed conflicts

There are currently 56 armed conflicts in the world. Almost half of the world takes direct part in them – 92 countries, and more than 100 are involved in one way or another (support of one of the parties, etc.). This is a record number of involved states – such indicators have not been recorded since the Second World War. These figures were published this week in the annual report Global Peace Index (Global Peace Index).
The global economic impact of wars in 2023 was $19.1 trillion, or $2,380 per person on the planet. At the same time, the costs of peacekeeping amounted to only 49.6 billion dollars, which is less than 0.6% of the total costs of armaments.
The conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza were the main driving forces behind the global decline in the level of peace. In 2023, 162,000 people died as a result of these two wars alone.
As a result of military conflicts, more than 110 million people in the world today are considered refugees or internally displaced persons.
The global peace index has been calculated for the eighteenth year in a row. In 2023, the security situation in the world took on the most threatening character.
“These numbers are horrifying! However, the report never once mentions Russia: it is she who is responsible for destabilizing the world order. Cooperation with the aggressor, turning a blind eye to his actions, fear of bringing the aggressor to justice — all this leads to even more terrible wars! I call on our partners and international organizations to unite and find new effective mechanisms so that Russia and other totalitarian regimes of the world stop and do not spread the fire of war to new territories and do not cause new victims”. – said Dmytro Lubinets, the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights.
As a reminder, since February 24, 2022, more than 10,000 civilians have died as a result of hostilities. Another 20,000 Ukrainian citizens were injured. In particular, 551 children died due to Russian attacks. Another 1,400 young Ukrainians were injured of various degrees of severity. The real numbers may be significantly higher, as the reports only take into account verified deaths.
