Turkey considers deploying F-16 fighters to Cyprus as conflict spreads in Middle East

Turkey is studying the possibility of deploying F-16 fighters on the territory of Cyprus amid the spread of the conflict in the Middle East and growing threats to the security of the region. This was reported by a representative of the Turkish Ministry of Defense in a comment to the agency Reuters.

According to him, such a step is considered as part of a phased planning aimed at strengthening the security of the island in the face of the worsening situation in the region.

The agency’s interlocutor noted that the deployment of F-16 fighters is one of the possible measures that can be implemented to respond to new security challenges and to protect the territory of Cyprus in the event of further escalation of the conflict.

The rising tensions in the Middle East have already affected international events planned on the island. Due to the security situation, Cyprus has postponed a meeting of European affairs ministers scheduled for March 2-3, as well as a meeting of culture ministers scheduled for March 5-6.

In addition, the United Kingdom previously announced its decision to send a destroyer to Cyprus. This came after a British air base located on the island was attacked by drones. The situation has raised concerns about the security of military facilities and infrastructure in the region.
