Ukraine peace talks ‘in danger zone’ due to Iran war: FT
Peace talks on Ukraine brokered by the US have effectively collapsed as US President Donald Trump has lost interest in the process due to the conflict in Iran, the Financial Times reports.
Four EU diplomats involved in the talks said the war in the Middle East had distracted Washington from a peace deal, which benefits Russia due to rising oil prices, the suspension of US sanctions and the rapid depletion of US ammunition needed by Kyiv. One EU official described the negotiation process as being in a “danger zone.”
“The Middle East has seriously diverted political attention from Ukraine. For us and for Ukraine, this is a disaster,” the diplomat stressed.
There are also reports of possible delays in the supply of American weapons to Ukraine, in particular air defense systems, as Washington is now prioritizing orders from the Middle East.
EU High Representative Kaia Kallas confirmed that competition for arms between Ukraine and the countries of the region is already being felt:
“This is a problem, because we are talking about the same resources for both the Middle East and Ukraine. It is obvious that America’s attention is now focused on the Middle East.”
