Ukrainian refugees commit crimes abroad: in Germany, a man attacked his family with a knife

European countries have opened their doors to Ukrainians fleeing war, but among the large number of refugees there are also those whose behavior abroad ends in criminal cases. Individual cases of domestic violence, assault, theft or work for foreign intelligence services end up in police reports and then become the subject of legal proceedings. One such incident occurred in the German city of Enger, where a family quarrel in the apartment of Ukrainian refugees ended in a stabbing and serious injuries to an 18-year-old boy.

Attack in the apartment of Ukrainian refugees

As reported Neue Westfälische and Mindener Tageblatt, on the evening of April 30, 2026 in an apartment building in the city of Enger, located in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia Rhine-Westphalia, a family conflict arose between a 51-year-old Ukrainian citizen and his wife. The argument quickly escalated into a verbal altercation, after which the man took a kitchen knife and attacked the woman.

Their 18-year-old son was in the apartment, who intervened to protect his mother. As a result, the attack turned on him, and the boy received several serious knife wounds. According to the police, these injuries were life-threatening, so the victim was urgently taken to the hospital.

The attacker’s wife also suffered injuries, although her injuries were less serious compared to her son’s. The main blow in this conflict fell on the young man, who tried to stop the domestic violence.

Police patrols and the rescue service arrived at the house after being called. Doctors provided assistance to the victims, and the 18-year-old boy was hospitalized for emergency surgery. After surgery, his condition was stabilized.

The 51-year-old man was detained directly in his apartment. According to German police, he was intoxicated and did not actively resist when he was detained. After that, he was handed over to investigators for procedural actions.

Due to the nature of the attack and the severity of the injuries, the case was transferred to a special commission for the investigation of murders at the Bielefeld police. For German law enforcement officers, such proceedings are not limited to clarifying the fact of a domestic quarrel, since investigators must establish whether the attacker was aware of the consequences of his actions, how the conflict developed, and why the knife was used against family members.

The next day after the detention, the man was taken to court. At the request of the prosecutor’s office, the judge issued an arrest warrant, after which the suspect was taken into custody. He is charged with attempted murder combined with infliction of serious bodily harm.

Investigators continued to interview witnesses, verify the circumstances of the attack and establish the motives that led to such an outbreak of violence. The family lived in Germany as refugees from Ukraine.

Criminal behavior of individual Ukrainian refugees abroad

The case in Enger became another example of how individual Ukrainians abroad end up in criminal records due to violence, theft, fraud or other offenses. Such stories cannot characterize the entire Ukrainian community, but they create a loud public resonance in countries that provided shelter to people fleeing the war.

In Germany, cases related to violence in the families of Ukrainian refugees have been repeatedly recorded. One of the high-profile cases was the murder of a Ukrainian woman in Frechen, where her ex-husband was sentenced to a long prison sentence after the court found him guilty of the woman’s death during the conflict. This case also involved a family that had been living in Germany after leaving Ukraine.

In Poland, a Ukrainian refugee was charged with collaborating with Russian intelligence. According to the investigation, he was performing tasks related to monitoring the railway infrastructure and aid transportation routes for Ukraine. The case ended in a verdict, and the case itself showed that criminal behavior can go far beyond domestic conflicts.

In the Czech Republic and Poland, there have also been reports of thefts, fights, and conflicts involving Ukrainians who were temporarily protected abroad. Some of these episodes involved shoplifting, drunken assaults, or clashes in refugee settlements.

Criminal cases involving refugees attract more attention than regular police reports, as they combine issues of security, trust in migration policy, and the attitude of local communities toward people who have been granted protection. When a person who has been granted asylum becomes a defendant in a case of violence or a serious crime, this inevitably affects the public debate in the host country.
