Ukrainians have a significant number of unregistered weapons, including trophies from soldiers: People’s Deputy

Civilians of Ukraine have a significant amount of unregistered weapons that ended up in their possession after fighting with the Russian military.

The civilian population of Ukraine still has a significant amount of unregistered weapons that came to them from Russian soldiers. This was reported by People’s Deputy of Ukraine and member of the Committee on National Security, Defense and Intelligence Oleksandr Fedienko v ether channel KYIV24.

According to him, if a citizen of Ukraine found a machine gun that belonged to a Russian soldier destroyed on the territory of Ukraine, then it is an automatic weapon. After the end of martial law, within 90 days, a citizen must apply to the state for reregistration of a non-automatic weapon, for example, a carbine, which will remain in the citizen’s possession.

Fedienko emphasized that this issue needs to be resolved, because now a large number of trophy weapons that previously belonged to the Russian military are unregistered. However, among these weapons there are also units that previously belonged to Ukrainian units.

“If a citizen of Ukraine finds a weapon, and it is registered in the registers of our country, that is, it belongs to the Armed Forces, border guards or the Ministry of Internal Affairs, such a weapon is not considered a trophy and will be confiscated.”, – emphasized the deputy.

According to the draft law, citizens must report found weapons at numbers 102/112 and declare them. The Ministry of Internal Affairs will develop an appropriate by-law mechanism that will allow the use of these weapons for the defense of Ukraine.

After the end of martial law, weapons will either be withdrawn or reissued as non-automatic.

The issue of trophy weapons

In his address, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, called on the Verkhovna Rada to consider draft law No. 9538, which amends the Law “On Ensuring the Participation of Civilians in the Defense of Ukraine.” The draft law provides the right to use trophy firearms during martial law, but subject to their mandatory registration.
