Violators of the language law have paid almost 200 thousand hryvnias in fines since the beginning of the year
From the beginning of 2025, violators of the language legislation paid fines in the amount of about 200 thousand hryvnias to local budgets. About this reported Taras Kremin, Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language.
According to him, during 2025, he received 1,182 appeals, according to which 420 state control measures are currently underway to identify signs of violations of the law.
“During this year, I personally reviewed 252 cases of administrative offenses. I issued 57 fines. On average, this is 3,400 hryvnias. Of course, there were also 134 repeated warnings. About 200,000 hryvnias were paid by violators to local budgets.”, — noted Kremin.
The official noted that the number of violations of language legislation in Ukraine is not decreasing, as new Internet resources and language scandals are constantly appearing. According to him, in 80% of cases, the situation can be corrected after appeals from citizens. This applies to the sphere of service, outdoor advertising, education, information about goods and services.
“That is, let’s say, if the sign was in a non-state language, it is changed to Ukrainian — and that’s the end of the situation.” — added Taras Kremin.
We will remind you that on January 16, 2021, the norms of the Law of Ukraine “On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as the State Language” entered into force, obliging the use of the state language when serving consumers. Violation is subject to a warning or a fine. The amount of the fine for the first violation is from 3,400 to 8,500 hryvnias, for the second – from 8,500 to 11,900 hryvnias. After January 16, 2022, print media must also be published in Ukrainian.
