Women’s March against changes to the Civil Code to be held in Kyiv
On March 8, International Women’s Day, a Women’s March will be held in Kyiv. Participants in the march will speak out against the drafts of the new edition of the Civil Code. The organizers reported this on social media.
According to them, draft law No. 14394 contains “kickbacks” that contradict modern human rights standards. Activists criticize the concepts of “good manners” and “immoral behavior”, as well as the six-month period for reconciliation between spouses before divorce and the ban on dissolving a marriage during pregnancy or with children under one year old.
The march participants claim that the new Civil Code “reduces the chances of justice” in the event of arrears in alimony payments and contains provisions that may increase economic risks and the possibility of financial control.
“Under the guise of “reforms”, drafts of the Civil Code are being promoted without proper public discussion. We demand their withdrawal and a broad public discussion with the involvement of public organizations and independent experts. Come to the Women’s March – for yourself and for everyone. Because if we remain silent, they will decide without us,” they declared organizers.
The march is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. in Taras Shevchenko Park. The Women’s March was founded in 2018, and its goal is to draw attention to women’s rights in society and the state, as well as the challenges they face.
Previously, more than three thousand people took part in the march in 2019, and in 2021, actions and flash mobs were held in Kyiv and 15 other cities of Ukraine before March 8.
