Zelensky announced the preparation of a new meeting between Ukraine and the US regarding the “peace plan”
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine and the United States are preparing for a new stage of negotiations on the “peace plan”, and a meeting of the teams of the two countries in the United States may take place in the near future. The head of state told this to journalists, commenting on the current state of the negotiation process.
According to Zelensky, the preparation of documents is in the final stage, after which the American side plans to hold a series of consultations.
“Today or tomorrow we will finalize the documents, then the US will hold consultations with the Russians in the coming days, after which they will hold consultations with the US president, after which our teams will meet in the US in the near future. I think maybe even at the weekend”, – the President of Ukraine noted.
He also explained that it is the results of these contacts that will provide an understanding of further steps, in particular the possibility of negotiations at the level of leaders. Ukraine, according to Zelensky, is considering the format of a separate meeting with US President Donald Trump.
The context for the new agreements was the round of negotiations that took place on December 14-15 in Berlin with the participation of Ukraine, the US and European partners. The negotiations were attended by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, US President’s Special Representative Steve Witkoff and US President’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.
The key issues of the negotiations remain territorial aspects and security guarantees. The US insists on Ukraine’s withdrawal from Donbas, which Kyiv does not agree to, and also proposes a security mechanism analogous to Article 5 of NATO. Zelensky previously emphasized that a document on such guarantees should be put to a vote in the US Congress.
In addition, on December 15, European states presented their own security guarantee plan for Ukraine, which consists of six points and covers issues of military support, ceasefire monitoring, and response in the event of repeated aggression by the Russian Federation.
According to Axios, the next meeting of Ukrainian and American representatives may take place in Miami with the participation of working groups and the military, where they plan to discuss maps. Zelensky also said that Ukraine expects the completion of the preparation of five documents of the “peace plan”, after which a separate meeting with Donald Trump is possible.
