President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi stated, that the United States of America has never considered Ukraine as part of NATO. The statement was made during a panel discussion at the Munich Security Conference.
“Let’s be honest, the United States never saw Ukraine in NATO. They only talked about it. They really didn’t want us in NATO. It’s true.”, – emphasized Zelensky.
He explained that during his negotiations with American leaders, he never once heard a clear position on Ukraine’s accession to the Alliance. In his opinion, this question concerns not only US President Donald Trump, but American politics in general.
“But that doesn’t mean we can’t change this policy.” – noted Zelensky.
He emphasized that the only alternative now could be the creation of NATO in Ukraine itself.
“This will mean that we need to strengthen our army, double the number of soldiers. We have 110 brigades, Russia has 220, twice as many as we have today.” – the president explained.
