Zohran Mamdani becomes first Muslim to win New York City mayoral election
Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani has won the mayoral election in New York City. The 34-year-old politician became the city’s youngest mayor in a century and the first Muslim and African-American to hold the office. Reuters reported.
According to the Election Commission, about 2 million voters took part in the vote this year, a record number since 1969. In addition to Mamdani, independent candidate and former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Slyva competed for the mayoral seat. Cuomo has already congratulated Mamdani on his victory.
Mamdani, who is known for his left-wing views, advocates raising taxes for large corporations and wealthy US citizens, as well as funding free kindergartens, public transportation, and a moratorium on rent increases.
US President Donald Trump also commented on the election results, saying that the Republicans’ defeat was a consequence of the shutdown and the absence of his name on the ballot. Experts note that these elections were the first serious test for the Trump administration after his re-election to the presidency.
On the eve of the vote, Trump unexpectedly called for support not for Republican Sliva, but for Democrat Cuomo. At the same time, he called Mamdani a communist and warned that he could cut federal funding for New York if he wins.
