Russia destroyed 80% of Ukrainian TPPs and 40% of HPPs: IMF

The International Monetary Fund has published a report that talks about the catastrophic consequences of Russian shelling for the Ukrainian energy system. According to the Fund, 80% of thermal generation and 40% of the country’s hydroelectric power plants were destroyed.

“Several thermal and hydroelectric power plants were completely destroyed in Kyiv, Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia regions, other TPPs and HPPs also received varying degrees of damage. The total number of destroyed capacities is estimated at over 80% for TPPs and over 40% for HPPs“, it says.

Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Zaporizhzhia regions suffered the greatest destruction, where several thermal and hydroelectric plants were completely destroyed. Other energy facilities also suffered varying degrees of damage. In general, Ukraine lost about half of its generating capacity.

The IMF report emphasizes that energy companies will cover the damage caused by the shelling with their own funds and with the help of donor support.

According to the assessment of the Kyiv School of Economics, damages and losses in the energy sector of Ukraine as a result of the invasion of the Russian Federation exceed 56 billion dollars.
