The number of undergraduate places in higher education institutions of Ukraine more than doubles the actual number of students
The number of places for a bachelor’s degree in higher education institutions of Ukraine significantly exceeds the actual number of students. This year, universities were ready to accept 429,000 applicants, but only about 200,000 people applied. Director of the Directorate of Higher Education and Adult Education of the Ministry of Education and Science Oleg Sharov explained on the air of the United telethon that this situation is the result of a long-term demographic crisis.
“We accepted half a million people a year for bachelor’s degrees 17-20 years ago. And so the number of places, which at that time was equipped and prepared by institutions of higher education, is decreasing, but it is decreasing quite slowly. That’s why we really have an excess of physical seats, – noted Sharov.
He added that currently, many universities continue the selection of applicants until mid-October.
“But no one will collect these 400,000, these entrants are simply not physically present. It should be understood that the total number of higher education opportunities for a long enough time is greater than the number of people who want and can obtain higher education. In principle, this is a feature not only of Ukraine, said the official.
According to Oleg Sharov, such an imbalance does not harm the state budget, since the budget order volumes are formed in accordance with the actual number of applicants and the demographic situation, and not based on all possible places offered by universities.
