Ukraine first used AI-powered “drones” against Russia

Ukrainian start-up Strategy Force Solutions has announced the first autonomous combat missions using “mother drones” with artificial intelligence against Russian targets. About this informs Forbes.

The cost of one such operation is approximately 10,000 dollars, which is much cheaper than missile strikes, which can cost millions. StratForce’s operational model involves the use of the GOGOL-M reusable carrier drone, which transports two FPV strike drones. These devices are capable of hitting specific targets at a distance of up to 300 kilometers, which makes it possible to damage sensitive objects such as parked aircraft, air defense systems or infrastructure objects.

The main technological solution of StratForce is the SmartPilot system. It combines advanced sensors — LIDAR, cameras — and artificial intelligence, allowing the drone to operate autonomously without GPS or constant operator intervention. The system provides navigation, avoidance of obstacles and accurate hitting of targets even in difficult conditions. According to the principle of operation, it is similar to an unmanned car.

LIDAR creates a three-dimensional model of space under all lighting and weather conditions. SmartPilot uses multi-sensory data fusion to form a picture of the environment and recognize targets. This allows artificial intelligence to independently make decisions, build a flight path and perform a combat mission.

The GOGOL-M drone delivers two FPV drones to the affected area, releases them, and returns. Attack drones autonomously search for predetermined targets and launch an attack. The system also supports other application scenarios — in particular, ambushes, when a drone can land on a territory, such as an air base, and wait for the appearance of an aircraft or the exit of equipment from shelter. It is also possible to wait for a military convoy with a subsequent attack at the right moment.
