Ukraine won a gold medal at the Fencing World Cup for the first time in two years
Ukrainian epee fencer Roman Svichkar, who last year became the European champion, won a gold medal at the World Cup stage in Astana.
On his way to triumph, the 32-year-old athlete from Kharkiv defeated two fencers from Israel – Dov Ber Vilensky and Alona Sarid, Swede Jonathan Svensson, Italian Matteo Galassi, Olympic bronze medalist Mohamed El-Said from Egypt, and in the final match he defeated two-time World Championship bronze medalist Ruslan Kurbanov from Kazakhstan.
For Svichkar, this is the first individual gold in his career at the World Cup stage. The last time Ukrainian epee fencers won at the World Cup stages in individual competitions was in May 2022.
For Ukraine, this is the first gold medal in two years at a World Cup-level tournament. Before that, the last time such an achievement was in February 2024, when Olga Kharlan won.
As for men’s epee, the last time Ukrainian athletes won at the World Cup stages in individual competitions was in May 2022.
