2 million for a heart: how much does an organ transplant cost in Ukraine

Organ transplantation is developing in Ukraine. During the past year, 589 organ transplants were performed. Kidneys are often transplanted. Thanks to the introduction of medical reform, organ transplantation in Ukraine is free of charge – funds for operations are provided to a specified list of hospitals from the state budget.
“Medical facilities that have a contract with the National Health Service of Ukraine (NHSHU) under the relevant package receive reimbursement from the state for: provision of medical services in the pre-transplantation period, direct transplantation, provision of medical services in the post-transplantation period”, – the Ministry of Health of Ukraine notes.
Despite the fact that transplants are free for patients, such operations are quite expensive. For example, the state pays 2 million hryvnias for a heart transplant. The most expensive lung transplant operations cost more than 2.6 million hryvnias. A liver transplant costs about 1.4 million hryvnias, and kidneys – about 800,000 hryvnias.
In addition to the operation itself, the state budget also pays for the pre-operative period and rehabilitation services. The National Health Service of Ukraine pays 41,000 hryvnias for the provision of medical services at the pre-transplantation stage. The tariff for the post-transplantation period varies depending on the transplanted organ and can range from 185,000 to 193,000 hryvnias. The provision of medical services for post-transplant follow-up of the patient lasts up to 360 days from the moment the patient was discharged from the hospital.
Last year, 589 such operations were performed in 25 transplant centers. In particular, 394 kidneys were transplanted, 126 liver transplants, 61 heart transplants, 4 lung transplants, 2 kidney and pancreas complex transplants, 1 heart + lung complex and one vascularized allograft operation (vessel transplant) were performed. .
