Russia is not ready for serious discussions on the establishment of peace in Ukraine: the US State Department

The United States has again rejected Russian President Vladimir Putin’s terms for peace talks on Ukraine, saying Moscow is “not ready for serious, honest discussions.”

State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said Putin made “another maximalist statement, calling on Ukraine to surrender even more of its sovereign territory than Russia has occupied so far before negotiations can even begin.”

“President Putin demanded that Ukraine agree to disarm, so that it would become vulnerable to future aggression from Russia”, – said Miller.

He stated that “no responsible country can say that this is a reasonable basis for the world.”

“This is contrary to the UN Charter. It goes against the basics of morality. This goes against basic common sense. It is clear that Russia is not ready for serious, conscientious discussions. Russia’s actions make this particularly evident as it continues to bomb Ukraine’s critical infrastructure, threatens shipping in the Black Sea, and forcibly deported tens of thousands of Ukrainian children.” – explained Miller.

Miller said that the United States will continue to provide unwavering support to Ukraine.

He reminded that last week US President Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed the Bilateral Security Agreement between the US and Ukraine.

“This is an important milestone in our desire to create a broad mutually reinforcing and powerful network of countries to secure the future of Ukraine and support its Euro-Atlantic integration, including operational interoperability with NATO.” – said Miller.

He noted that in this agreement, the US and Ukraine declared their intentions to develop cooperation in the security and economic spheres, promote the fight against corruption, and seek to bring Russia to justice.

“We will continue to work with Ukraine, its partners and the global community to create the conditions for a truly just and, therefore, durable world,” “The bilateral security agreement is part of a broader effort to maintain a durable peace for Ukraine, which, as President Biden said , must be supported by Ukraine’s own ability to defend itself now and deter future aggression, Miller said. “Meanwhile, we will support Ukraine and its people, who are defending themselves from Russian aggression.” – emphasized Matthew Miller
